What makes one a "significant other"? Do you have to live together? Share the same bed? Finances? Commute? Well, room mates, co-workers, and good friends might do all of the above, but that doesn't necessarily qualify them as "significant others", does it? What does then? Is it when emotions are involved? When we share our emotions with one another? Laugh together? Cry? Argue? Share secrets? I think we're getting closer.
The beauty of "significant" is that we choose someone to be significant to us. It's someone we find significant enough to share with whom we are; our innermost secrets, our joyful likes, preferences, and painful dislikes, as well as fears. Ideally it's someone we trust with all of these feelings without hesitancy. Do you have a significant other? Are you one? If you are, you must be a grand individual. Being worthy of holding someone's heart in the palms of your hands is a great honor, not to mention a significant task.
